Roughly 87 pharmacies in the state of Alaska currently employ a total of about 620 pharmaceutical technicians.  Of these, approximately 358 are licensed by the Alaska State Board of Pharmacy.  Pharmacy technicians are pharmacist assistants, often helping with the preparation and dispension of prescription drugs.  Responsibilities of pharmacy technicians include counting tablets, labeling containers, performing various administrative tasks and handling customer service.  Pharmacy technicians have access to many controlled substances, so various state-specific guidelines often apply.

The State of Maryland Board of Pharmacy has several requirements for anyone interested in working as a pharmacy technician in the state. Aspiring pharmacy technicians must register with the Board and complete a Board approved training program or a national pharmacy technician certification program. Board approved training programs must be a maximum of six months long and include 160 hours of work experience.

The Maine Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation requires registration for all pharmacy technicians. In addition, all technicians new to the field (never been licensed) must complete a training program managed by his or her potential employer (this applies to pharmacies), The National Pharmacy Technician Training Program, or an accredited college. These are the minimum requirements set forth by the Office—not by employers.
